When a garage door stops working, the opener is blamed more often than it deserves. Separating an automation fault from a door-mechanism fault is the first useful step.

The problem

The motor is not lifting the door

This is the single most useful idea on the page. A garage door opener does not carry the weight of the door — the springs do. The opener supplies a relatively modest push and pull to move a door that is already balanced.

That means a motor which sounds healthy but cannot move the door is very often reporting a mechanical problem rather than having one. Equally, a door that moves smoothly by hand but does not respond to a remote is far more likely to have a control, power or safety-beam fault.

The practical test — done only if the door is closed, sound and not suspected of a spring failure — is to disconnect the opener with the manual release and move the door by hand. Smooth and light points at the opener. Heavy, uneven or stiff points at the door.

What sits inside an automated door

Naming the part you are describing saves a lot of guesswork on the phone.

Motor unit and drive
The head unit mounted to the ceiling or, on many roller doors, to the barrel itself. The drive may be belt, chain, screw or direct-to-barrel; each has its own wear pattern and noise signature.
Trolley and manual release
On rail-driven openers the trolley connects the door to the drive. The release cord disengages it so the door can be moved by hand — useful in a power failure, and the correct first step in a power-related lockout.
Travel limits
Settings that tell the opener where fully open and fully closed are. When limits drift, a door may stop short, reverse before closing, or press too hard into the floor.
Force settings
How much resistance the opener will push against before it decides something is in the way. Winding force up to defeat a mechanical problem is a common and dangerous shortcut.
Safety beams
A photo-eye pair across the opening. If the beam is broken, misaligned or dirty, many openers will refuse to close or will reverse part-way. A steady versus flashing indicator LED on the eyes is a genuinely useful thing to look at.
Remotes, wall control and receiver
Handsets pair to a receiver in the head unit. A single remote failing usually points at the handset or its battery; every control failing points further upstream.

Power and supply

What you notice: No lights, no sound, nothing from any control. Sometimes other garage circuits are affected too.

Worth checking the circuit breaker and that the unit is plugged in before booking anything.

Safety beam obstruction or misalignment

What you notice: Door opens fine but will not close, or closes part-way and reverses. Indicator LED flashing.

Cobwebs, a bin, a bike and direct low sun are all common causes. Cleaning the lenses is safe to do.

Remote and receiver faults

What you notice: One handset stops working, or all of them do. Range gets shorter over time.

A dead battery in one remote is different from a failed receiver. Test every control before calling.

Travel limit and force drift

What you notice: Door stops short, does not seal at the floor, or bounces back off the ground.

Adjustment is a setup task rather than a part failure, and it interacts with the safety reversal.

Drive and trolley wear

What you notice: Motor runs but the door does not move; grinding, slipping or a rattling chain or belt.

A stripped gear or a failed trolley is a genuine opener repair.

Control board and capacitor failure

What you notice: Intermittent operation, humming without movement, or a unit that has stopped entirely with power present.

Board availability for older units is a real constraint and often drives the repair-or-replace decision.

Most opener checks are safe. The line is crossed when a setting is changed to force a door that is telling you something mechanical is wrong.

If someone is injured, or there is a fire or electrical emergency, call 000 first.

Do this while you wait

  • Clear the photo-eye beam path and wipe both lenses with a dry cloth.
  • Check the circuit breaker and that the unit is plugged in.
  • Try every remote and the wall control, and change a remote battery if one is suspect.
  • Watch a full cycle from a safe distance and note where it stops or reverses.

Do not attempt

  • Do not increase the force setting to make a door close or open.
  • Do not disable, tape over or bypass the safety beams.
  • Do not pull the manual release on a door you suspect has a broken spring.
  • Do not open the head unit casing or work on fixed wiring.
  • Do not run the opener repeatedly against an obstruction.

Scope is the provider's to set. Typically it includes both halves of the system.

  • Confirming power at the unit and testing every control — wall button, each remote, and any keypad.
  • Checking the safety beams for alignment, contamination and correct indication.
  • Disconnecting the opener and testing the door by hand for balance and free travel.
  • Reviewing travel limits and force settings, and confirming the safety reversal actually reverses.

No price is published here. A figure invented before a provider has seen the door would not help you compare quotes, and this site does not quote.

Repair or replace: what actually shifts the answer

Openers are the one area where replacement genuinely competes with repair, mostly because of part availability and safety features.

Criteria that push an assessment towards repair or towards replacement. Neither column decides the outcome on its own.

Different doors, different opener behaviour

The same symptom description means different things depending on the installation.

Sectional and panel-lift doors
Usually a ceiling-mounted head unit with a rail and trolley. The manual release cord is the red handle on the trolley.
Roller doors
Often a motor fitted directly to the barrel, with the release integrated into the unit. There is no rail or trolley, so 'the motor runs but nothing moves' points somewhere different.
Doors with keypads or app control
Adds another control path to test. If the app works and the remote does not, the receiver is fine and the handset is suspect.
Townhouses and complexes
Shared power arrangements, restricted parking and body-corporate approval for visible changes can all affect how the work is arranged. Mention it when you call.

Opener faults are the easiest category to narrow down before you call, and doing so saves everyone time.

Everything on this list can be observed from the ground or from memory. Do not go near a spring, a cable or a bottom bracket to answer any of it.

Questions about this repair

The motor runs but the door does not move. What does that mean?

On a rail-driven opener it usually means the drive is turning but the connection to the door is not — a stripped gear, a failed trolley, or a release that has been left disengaged. On a roller door with a barrel motor it points at the drive coupling. Either way it is an opener-side fault rather than a door-side one.

Why does my garage door open but not close?

This pattern is characteristic of the safety beams. Most openers will allow opening with a broken beam but refuse to close. Check the lens path for obstructions, wipe both lenses, and look at whether the indicator LEDs are steady. Direct low sun into a lens can also cause it.

Can I just turn the force up so it closes?

Please do not. Force settings exist so the opener stops when it meets resistance. Winding them up to overcome a mechanical problem removes the protection that stops a door closing on an obstruction, and it hides the real fault.

Are all opener brands repairable?

It depends entirely on the model and on whether parts are still supplied. This site will not claim that every make and model can be repaired. The attending provider confirms compatibility and availability for your specific unit.

Do I need an electrician for a garage door opener?

Work on the opener unit itself is usually within a garage door provider's scope, but anything involving fixed wiring may require an appropriately licensed electrical trade depending on the work involved. Ask the provider what their scope covers rather than assuming.
